As a teacher (married to a teacher and from a family of teachers), Jeremy Waters knew only too well that teachers were struggling to cope with an ever-increasing administrative burden.<\/pee>Discussions with hundreds of teachers and leadership teams, supported by performance data, showed that unidentified gaps in student learning was the single biggest stumbling block for students. Working with the team since 2015, Elastik was rolled out across Australia and is now in over 500 schools. The pressure of evenings and weekends spent marking and the frustrations of hours spent on administration when your desire is to teach. But I have also experienced that joy when you see a child really understands a concept and grows in confidence. Elastik began in (date) as Best Performance, a boutique data solutions company for schools, based in Perth, Western Australia. I could see that there was potential for the technology to solve many of the problems faced in schools today. But the first step was to hear about those challenges first-hand. From conversations with teachers and 1000s of coaching sessions with schools on site, we’ve learned the number one impediment to student progression is identified gaps in their learning journey.<\/h3>\n

The pandemic only increased these problems. In the UK alone it has been estimated that (insert statistic around missed days). While every child was affected, each one had a different experience of remote learning. Some had structure and support at home and were able to continue learning with only minimal disruption. For others very little learning was possible either because of lack of resources, lack of structure or simply the emotional impact of living through a pandemic meant they were not able to engage. Most teachers would love to be able to target these gaps, but are already over-stretched and time poor. Introducing technology can add to their stress levels as it is overly complex, a poor fit for their needs or requires them to compromise their teaching approach. This was the inspiration behind Elastik \u2013 to develop a solution that would rapidly and accurately provide teachers with tools to identify and manage learning gaps, to save them time and effort and to do it in a way that was teacher-led, not technology-led. Elastik identifies the gaps and supports teachers around remedying those gaps, so students can have a stable foundation for further learning. We work with schools existing assessment data, then, moving forward, teachers can use the platform to create bespoke assessments to assess progress or target particular areas. Data visualisation makes it easy to interpret the data without specialist skills so that every teacher can easily engage. It also provides lesson plans so that teachers can take action right away. To make this all the assessments in the system, all the historic assessments, and all the lessons plans are linked to the curriculum. The goal is to make it as stress free as possible for teachers so it can create time for them, not add challenges. The platform was originally called EdCompanion. This reflected the all important human element. Every school was provided with a guide who was both an expert on the platform and an ex-teacher. They helped each school get set up and provided ongoing advice.<\/div>\n

So, in 2015, together with some of Australia\u2019s top software engineers, Jeremy began developing an online platform to automate time-consuming processes.<\/p>\n

The objective was to develop an intuitive solution that was teacher and pupil focussed rather than technology led. In February 2021, Elastik launched across Australia and is now fully functional in over 400 schools.<\/p>\n

Elastik has been working with UK experts to adapt the platform to the UK curriculum for Key Stage 1-3. In October 2021, Elastik launched a pilot programme in collaboration with St Monica\u2019s CPS.<\/p>\n

We launched in Australia in January 2020 and had more than 400 schools with active subscriptions by the end of the school year in Australia. So most schools engage with the software, either at home, or when I say schools, teachers, or at school. And it’s incredibly effective for working with focus groups or intervention groups, as well as cohorts or particular classrooms. Their feedback has been amazing, but we are still listening to our network to make sure we keep adapting to the need.<\/p>\n

Throughout 2020 we worked with UK experts to adapt Elastik to the UK curriculum for Key Stage 1-3 and in January 2021 launched in the UK as Elastik, initially piloting with primary schools across the country.<\/p>\n
