{"id":2705,"date":"2022-04-22T09:42:21","date_gmt":"2022-04-22T09:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elastik.com\/?p=2705"},"modified":"2022-04-22T10:57:13","modified_gmt":"2022-04-22T10:57:13","slug":"schools-white-paper-2022-identifies-the-need-for-cutting-edge-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elastik.com\/en\/schools-white-paper-2022-identifies-the-need-for-cutting-edge-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Schools White Paper 2022 identifies the need for cutting edge technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The government recently published its long-awaited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/schools-white-paper-delivers-real-action-to-level-up-education\"><strong>Schools White Paper<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 the first in six years and the first released since the emergence of Covid-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Education Secretary, Nadhim Zahawi, positioned the paper as \u201clevelling up in action\u201d, with clear goals to raise standards for all:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Higher grades at GCSE<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Better SATS scores<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">All schools being in multi-academy trusts by 2030<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mainstream schools expected to offer 32.5-hour week<b> <\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Co-creation of free, optional, adaptable, digital curriculum resources<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">All children were at risk of falling behind in their learning during the Covid-19 disruption.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is attributed to national and local closures through the peak of the pandemic, followed by ongoing and unpredictable staff and student absences. However it\u2019s clear that schools that had been able to invest heavily in technology and resources, often private schools, found themselves better placed to provide continuity for their students. Unsurprisingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/pupils-progress-in-the-2020-to-2022-academic-years\"><strong><span class=\"s3\">Department of Education<\/span> research<\/strong><\/a> showed that children in the most disadvantaged schools were hardest hit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This effort to provide quality education for every student predates the pandemic, for instance, in 2016 only 68% of children were taught in schools Ofsted ranked as \u2018good\u2019, rising to 86% in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In fact some areas have markedly improved.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In 2012 only 58% of Year 1 pupils met the expected standard in literacy, rising to 82% in 2019 after the introduction of the Phonics Screening Check.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, for Key Stage 2 pupils, the improvements have been less dramatic. Despite an increase of 7% in reading and 9% in maths since 2016, only 65% of KS2 pupils reached the expected standard reading, writing and maths in 2019. This means that at the start of the pandemic, 35% of children were <i>below<\/i> the expected standard. It is hard to imagine that this figure has risen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The White Paper proposes to help schools through the provision of resources, but will this provide the support that teachers and pupils need?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Resources become useful when they match a specific learning need. For time-pressed teachers, it\u2019s identifying the need \u2013 for their class as a whole and for each individual student \u2013 that is the critical task. And it is an area where algorithms and data analysis can lessen the load for teachers. Technology can enable teachers and pupils to focus on the right areas, use the right resources and to work smarter, not just harder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Elastik is a great example of how this works.
