Learning Spotlight – Impact

2 min read

The Impact tab within the Learning Spotlight allows you to track student learning by comparing a baseline assessment against a follow-up assessment. Before using it, make sure your Learning Spotlight has already been set up, and that you have both a baseline and a follow-up assessment (such as a completed Spotlight Review) with overlapping curriculum codes.

To get started, select the subject tab you want to view (e.g. Maths, English, Science) and then click Impact. From there, click Select Assessment to choose your assessments. On the left-hand side, set a date range for your baseline assessments, and on the right-hand side, set a date range for your impact assessments. At least one follow-up assessment must be selected on the right before you can apply the selection.

Once your selections are applied, the Impact view displays as either a bubble graph or a bar graph — you can toggle between the two. Each bubble or bar represents a curriculum code, and clicking on one will show you how many students have data for that code, how many have gaps, and how the number of students with gaps has changed between the baseline and the follow-up assessment.

You can use the Biggest Gap button to surface the curriculum codes with the most significant gaps, and hovering over individual codes shows the students within each gap. Selecting the Year button instead shows gaps broken down by year level concepts.

From any selected bubble or concept, you can take action by creating a Focus Group (grouping all students with gaps in the selected codes), a Spotlight Review (assigning targeted questions to those students), or a Lesson Guide (which can be exported to PowerPoint or PDF).

To refine the view further, use the Filters button to show or hide specific year levels or strands (e.g. Literature, Language, Literacy in English). You can also click on the year level legends below the graph to toggle individual year levels on or off. If you need to change your assessment selections at any point, click Edit Selection to adjust the date ranges or tests for either the baseline or impact side.
