Value Add:
Value Add shows how either a cohort, classroom or student is progressing relative to the national average. This indicator shows whether students are keeping on track, falling behind or exceeding ahead of schools across Australia. A positive Value add shows that their growth is ahead of the national average, whereas a negative Value Add would indicate that they have fallen behind the national average across the two testing periods. Value Add will display as N/A where national mean data is not available for a particular assessment type.
Progression:
Progression shows how much a cohort, classroom or individual student’s average score has changed between 2 assessment periods.
This is calculated as the difference between the average scale score from the selected start year to the end year. Only students who have completed the assessment are included in this calculation so the comparison is consistent across the selected period. Progression requires at least two annual data sets for results to be calculated.
Effect Size:
Effect Size measures the significance of a cohort or classroom’s growth. It provides a standardised way to interpret how meaningful the progression is, not just by showing a number for reference. An effect size of 0.4 is considered the benchmark for expected growth which is equivalent to approximately 12 months of learning.
These results are colour coded for easy interpretation:
Red (below 0): Downward growth
Yellow (0.1 – 0.19): Low growth
Orange (0.2 – 0.39): Moderate growth
Green (0.4 and above): Desired growth (at or above desired progress)
Stable Cohort Mean:
Stable Cohort Mean refers to the average score of students that were present within the assessments included in both the start and end year selected progression range. It excludes students who missed one part of the assessment during the range giving a more consistent and comparable measure of growth for the same group of students.
