Learning Trend Overview

1 min read

Learning Trend is Elastik’s progression view for NAPLAN and PAT assessments. It pulls together each student’s results across multiple assessments and plots how their performance is shifting over time – not just where they sit on a single test, but the direction they’re heading. Knowing whether a student is improving, plateauing, or sliding backwards is often more useful than any individual score. Learning Trend is built for the moments when teachers need that context, such as preparing for parent–teacher interviews or writing reports.

While an individual assessment score tells you how a student went on the day, Learning Trend tells you the story across the term, the year, or the full time you’ve had them. It’s the long view that sits alongside Learning Spotlight and Spotlight Reviews to give teachers a complete picture: Spotlight shows you the gaps, Trend shows you the trajectory. For coordinators and leadership, Learning Trend offers a way to look across cohorts and year levels – useful for moderation conversations, NAPLAN readiness planning, and tracking school-wide progress against PAT benchmarks. Simply ensure that your students have data from these tests taken in the second half of 2 different years, then you can use the Progression tool to view your students progression.

A few things that teachers can achieve with Learning Trend:

  • Compare a student against their classroom, year level, or school average to see whether their growth is on pace.
  • Look at a whole class at once to spot patterns – students improving together, students falling behind, or domains where the cohort is weakest.
  • Combine insights from Learning Trend with Learning Spotlight to move from “this student is trending down in Reading” to “and here are the specific sub-strands driving it.”
